I can clearly recall the first day of graduate school as my professor stood at the front of the room and spoke about the "Wheel of Life". Each of us had a photocopied picture of a bicycle wheel and were told to write in the different sections (between the spokes) the people and things that were part of our daily life (e.g family, work, personal, etc.). Each area was the same size. The discussion went on about how important it was to maintain a balance in your own life, in all areas, or your wheel would have a "flat" which, in return, would not allow a smooth ride on your bicycle (of life). For example, if your were spending countless hours working each week which was resulting in financial security, most likely your family/friends/social section was hurting as a result. What good is money if you have no time to actually enjoy it?

Of course this made sense to me, as I tucked it into the back of my mind somewhere. It was not until a few years later after graduating with my Master's degree, getting my first "real" job and beginning what I was to call "my life" that I recalled that day and actually took time to reflect on the true meaning behind that lesson.

Fast forward once again - I am married, have 2 amazing children, am a pediatric occupational therapist, have traveled a bit, and truly consider myself blessed in numerous ways. I also have definitely had my share of adversity in my life - which has actually allowed me to open my eyes even wider and examine who I am and what I want out of life.

I recently began a journey in personal development which has brought about amazing changes in my life! The whole concept of the "wheel of life" really became apparent to me. I was accepting certain things in my life as "just the way things are" and not acknowledging that I am in control of what I do and what I don't do. If I am not satisfied with something, then I have to take action to change it or it will remain that way indefinitely. The challenge arises when we actually do move forward and suddenly things become uncomfortable'. This is the main reason that most people remain in jobs they aren't happy with or in circumstances they complain about. Nobody enjoys feeling "uncomfortable", but what you have to know is that feeling is what is going to bring about amazing changes in your life and allow you to BE IN CONTROL! We are so conditioned by society and beliefs that were pounded into our heads our entire lives about what we should' and should not' do that we automatically think these thoughts are what we need to follow. Just keep in mind that when you go to change these deep-rooted beliefs that the feeling of uncomfortable' will definitely arise. Be strong! Work through them and maintain laser focus about what it is and where it is that you are going.

I have always put others ahead of myself and allowed others to have a huge impact on how and what I did in my life. This has actually held me back numerous times and ways from reaching my full potential. I now understand and continue to learn the true importance of taking care of myself first. Previously, this concept seemed selfish to me. I now see that by taking care of myself, I can take care of those I love much more effectively. When I feel good on the inside, I carry myself differently, engage in interactions more confidently, and also am more apt to bring happiness and joy to those around me.

I have also come to understand the importance of getting clear on what I want out of life and what is truly important to me, and then, making sure I take action to make it happen! You can gather all of the information in the world about something, but it is what you do with that information that really matters! We are all on the same playing field, but some of us choose to play full out while others choose to sit on the sidelines or not even show up for the game at all! It is actually all a CHOICE! Be the person who is clear on where they are going and do not let anything or anyone stand in your way. Take a stand for yourself - it is the most powerful decision you will make!
